Mounting Panels on a Shed Roof: What to Check First
A shed roof isn't always built for panels. Check before you drill.
Shed roofs are a great spot for panels, but many sheds are lightly built. Check the structure and the wind before you start.
1. Can the roof carry them?
- Panels and rails often add somewhere around 12 to 15 kg per square metre. Wind uplift can be much more than the weight.
- Check purlin size and spacing, and how the roof is fixed down.
- If you're unsure, ask the shed maker or an engineer. Some councils need approval.
2. Use proper mounting gear
- Use a solar rail and clamp system rated for your wind region.
- Fix into purlins, not just the roof sheet.
- Seal every penetration and use the right fixings for the roofing material.
3. Wind
Australia is split into wind regions, and cyclone areas need much stronger mounting. Panel edges and corners of the roof get the highest loads. Follow the rail maker's span tables.
4. Cable routing
- Run DC cable in UV-rated conduit and keep it tidy and protected.
- Use correct solar connectors and don't mix brands.
5. Who does what
Grid-connected solar must be installed by an accredited installer, and connecting to a switchboard is a licensed electrician's job. Working on roofs is dangerous. Use fall protection.
6. Quick summary
- Check the structure and wind region.
- Use rated rails, fix into purlins, seal penetrations.
- Get the right people for grid connection and roof work.
In Australia, any work on 240V AC wiring, including connecting an inverter, battery or solar system to a switchboard or fixed wiring, must be done by a licensed electrician.
