Panel Tilt and Direction in Australia: Getting the Most From Your Panels

North, tilted at about your latitude, is the classic answer. Here is when to break the rule.

In Australia the sun sits in the northern part of the sky, so panels facing north catch the most energy across the year.

1. Direction

2. Tilt

A good starting point is a tilt about equal to your latitude.

3. Roof pitch is often good enough

Most roofs aren't at the perfect angle, and that's usually fine. Being 10 to 15° off the ideal often costs only a few percent. Tilt frames add cost, wind load and roof penetrations.

4. Quick summary

In Australia, any work on 240V AC wiring, including connecting an inverter, battery or solar system to a switchboard or fixed wiring, must be done by a licensed electrician.
