Grid-Tie vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar: Which Suits You?

Three ways to set up solar. Here is how they differ.

There are three main ways to set up solar. They differ in cost, complexity and what happens when the grid goes down.

1. Grid-tie

Panels feed an inverter connected to the grid. You use solar first, and the rest is exported.

2. Off-grid

No grid connection. Solar charges batteries, and an inverter runs your loads.

3. Hybrid

Grid-connected with a battery. Solar charges the battery, and the battery runs things in the evening or in a blackout (if set up for backup).

5. Rules

Grid-connected and hybrid systems must be installed by an accredited installer and approved by your network.

6. Quick summary

In Australia, any work on 240V AC wiring, including connecting an inverter, battery or solar system to a switchboard or fixed wiring, must be done by a licensed electrician.
